Building An RDA / RTA

You will need:

Building an RDA and RTA

INSTALLING YOUR COIL

DIY Coils for RDA and RTA Remove the build deck from the tank and loosen the post screws most of the way. Put the coil on a screwdriver and place one lead in the positive post hole and the other in the negative post hole. Position the coil as straight as possible. Once centered and straight, tighten the post screws. Once secure, use the wire cutters to trim the straight ends of the coil as close to the post as possible.

TESTING YOUR COILS FOR SHORTS

It is vital you now test your coil for any shorts. If you will be using this build on a REGULATED device, you may choose to use your regulated device to check your coil. If you are unsure if your device is regulated or not, please use an OHM's reader. Screw the build deck, complete with coil, in to the OHMs reader. The display will indicate what omh your coil is producing. It is not unusual for there to be a margin of 0.05 ohm from the target resistance. If the reading has a variation of greater than 0.05 omh of your target omhs, you will need to check the following:
  • Check the RDA post screws are tight.
  • For dual coils - ensure the coils are not touching each other or the deck.
  • Check that the build deck is properly screwed into the ohms reader or REGULATED device.
If you have completed these checks and your reading is now within the acceptable range, continue to the next step. If you are not getting a reading within the acceptable range, you may need to consider starting again with a new coil.

Building coils for an RDA and RTA - Test Firing TEST FIRING THE COIL AND ELIMINATING HOT SPOTS

By now you have installed and tested the coil and there are no shorts. It is important that you now test fire the coil and ensure there are no hot spots as this can.......... If you are using an OHMS Reader, you can simply fire the reader. If you are using a regulated device, it is important that you reduce the wattage to between 20-30 watts prior to testing. Once you are ready, repeatedly press the fire button (at approximately 2 second intervals) until the coil/s are glowing. Take special note of any bright red parts of the coil, these are called hot spots. A hot spot is an area of the coil that heats up faster than the rest of the coil. Hot spots can decrease the life of the coil so it is best to fix them immediately, rather than ignore them. To fix hot spots try strumming the coil lightly (like strumming a guitar) and/or compress the coil with a pair of needle nose pliers or ceramic tweezers. You can also spread the coils slightly. Once you have done this, re-test the coil and repeat until there are no hot spots.

WICKING THE COIL USING COTTONBuilding coils for an RDA and RTA Wicking The Coil

There are many ways to wick the coil and some are easier than others, however, practice makes perfect. There is a variety of cotton available including organic cotton, pre-cut and shoelace to name a few. Start with a piece of cotton just big enough to snugly fit your coil with around half an inch left on either side. You may find that it helps to twist the end of the cotton in order to push it through the coil to start. If you are using shoelace cotton, there is no need to do so as the piece of plastic at the end (like the end of a shoe lace) does this for you. If the cotton doesn’t slide though easily, it is likely that you are using too much cotton, however if your cotton is sliding loosely inside the coil there is not enough cotton so you may need to add some more. Once the cotton wick is threaded evenly though the coil, trim the ends with sharp scissors until they are just long enough to be folded under and sit on the deck of the RDA. Before tucking the ends of the wick under the coil/s, use ceramic tweezers or a wire brush to gently brush the cotton and fluff it up. Once you have done this, tuck the ends of the wick under and into the base of the build deck.

Building coils for an RDA and RTA Double check for safetyDOUBLE CHECKING

After wicking the coil it's best to check that the coils are still tight. Double check that they are still firmly tightened. Ensure that the resistance/ohms haven’t changed and if they have, step backwards through this guide in order to identify the problem and correct it. Once satisfied with your final check, add your vape juice to the cotton until it's saturated.

VAPE AND ENJOYBuilding coils for an RDA and RTA Enjoy

You have now successfully built your RDA! Replace you RDA cap, Vape and Enjoy! If you find that you get a mouthful of e-juice, try blowing into the RDA before inhaling. Alternatively, if you taste a dry/burnt taste, you need to add more juice.

** FOR DUAL COILS **

Building dual coils for an RDA and RTAThe process for building dual coils is the same, however when using a dual build, remember that the ohm's will be halved. This is because you are creating a second path for electricity to follow, which results in each path (i.e. coil) carrying half the current. For example 0.20 ohms = 0.10 ohms per coil. Also, be sure that the coils are as identical as possible. When firing your dual coil they should glow evenly. If one coil glows more brightly than the other, check that the RDA screws are still tight. If the coils continue to glow unevenly, try strumming and squeezing with ceramic tweezers until both coils glow evenly from the inside out.
